Pointers for Your First Time at the Gym

So you’ve finally decided to take the leap and join a gym. Congratulations, you’ve taken an important step to living a healthier life! Joining a gym can be exciting and intimidating so here are a few tips from the Active&Fit DirectTM program to keep in mind when you hit the gym for the first time:

  • Get a feel for the place. The staff will more than likely give you a full tour of the place when you first sign up. But if they do not offer, make sure to request this. Ask plenty of questions. Get to know everything you can about equipment location, classes, and anything else the gym may offer.
  • Consider a session with a certified personal trainer. Working with a certified personal trainer can be expensive, but it may be worth it as you get started. A trainer can help you build a workout plan and ensure you’re exercising with proper form.
  • Ask a friend to tag along. Going to the gym with a workout buddy is a great way to stay motivated and can help ease any butterflies you may have about being new to the place.
  • Avoid rush hour. Try to find a time to visit when the gym isn’t too busy. This way you can take your time and get to know the layout of the gym without feeling rushed or having to wait for equipment or machines to be free.
  • Come with a plan (but keep your goals simple). Whether you’re looking to lose weight, build strength, or increase your endurance (or all of those things), you’re not going to achieve that in one visit. Start with a manageable goal that you know you can accomplish.
  • Warm up and cool down. Even if your first workout is a light one, always get in the habit of warming up before every workout. Do movement to increase your body temperature and increase your heart rate before your workout, like walking on the treadmill or biking. And make sure to cool down with some stretching after you’re finished.

Most gym-goers are just like you. They’re trying to live a healthy life and stay fit. Don’t forget: every person there once had their first day at the gym, too. In time you’ll start to feel right at home just like the other regulars.

You’ll find that most gyms are very inclusive. Don’t be afraid to ask for help should you need it. The staff, and even most gym members, try their best to provide a warm and welcoming atmosphere.

If you have any health conditions or injuries, check with your doctor first before starting any exercise programs.
